Károly Balázs Solymár, Deputy State Secretary for Infocommunications at the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, said at the opening event that building a 5G private mobile network at the Fényeslitke intermodal terminal is an important milestone.
Europe’s largest smart rail logistics terminal will be the first on the continent to use its own 5G network for internal communications and the operation of technological devices. The terminal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
Construction of the East-West Gate (EWG) intermodal terminal on 85 hectares began in Fényeslitke near the Ukrainian-Hungarian border in January 2021. The hardware required for the development is provided by Huawei, while the platform and private 5G network support is provided by Vodafone Hungary. The project is an important milestone not only in domestic 5G developments but also in the field of digitalizing rail freight.
The goal of the Hungarian government is for the country to be a winner in the transformation of the world market. It is thus using the tools of job creation, investments and tax cuts to make the Hungarian economy sustainable and competitive in the long run, the state secretary emphasized.
János Tálosi, CEO of East-West Intermodal Logistics Ltd., emphasized that with the construction of the East-West Gate, Hungary will return to the map of international rail logistics and once again have the opportunity to become actively involved in rail freight transport between Asia and Europe.
